Since the introduction of sensor networks there is an extensive amount of work that investigate the lifetime problem in these networks. Because the nodes that form the network have very limited power, improving the functional lifetime of the system becomes the first and the most important problem in sensor networks. In this work the fundamentals of these networks are examined and tried to be fully understood. We present also a good classification of the protocols and algorithms proposed in the literature according to their approaches to improve the lifetime. We also propose a distributed and dynamic protocol in order to prolong the functional lifetime. We expect that this preliminary work will help the researchers studying on this topic.
